Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
