The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
