Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a huge suspense moment and introduced the premier party of characters who will branch out from the primary party to begin their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the events of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then cleared his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each member has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in House Halovar could enable the team enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that control the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s follow-up content, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Fans can expect finding out which players will be in which group in the story’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
