Comeback Medvedev Claims First Championship in 882 Days

19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev claimed his initial championship for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.

The athlete, a ex- world number one, has endured a difficult period, winning just one match at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in specific - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.

Currently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's maiden title following the Italian tournament and initial on a hard surface after spring of the previous year.

The win also means Medvedev has achieved twenty-one victories at twenty-one different events.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my both daughters together, so to secure a championship is especially meaningful," commented ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my child Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six finals, including in that event previously this season.

His counter-punching play style and regular outbursts on the tennis court had caused commentators to doubt if his capacity to play at the highest level was finished.

But the player has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to advance forward and compete positively, reinforced by an improved serve.

Medvedev came back from a break down in the opening set against the difficult Frenchman, taking four of the last five points to take the lead.

The pair traded service breaks in the middle set before Moutet, attempting for his first ATP Tour title, seized the initiative to create a third set.

He rescued 4 initial break points in a close final set before the Russian secured a break to that score to serve for the match.

Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the title with a rally at the net, with Moutet unable to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
